The International Cooperative Alliance unites, represents and serves cooperatives worldwide. Founded in 1895, it is one of the oldest non-governmental organisations and one of the largest ones measured by the number of people represented: 1 billion cooperative members on the planet.
It is the apex body representing cooperatives, which are estimated to be around 3 million worldwide, providing a global voice and forum for knowledge, expertise and co-ordinated action for and about cooperatives.

Two new members joined the ICA in July 2025:
Institute of Cooperatives and Bio-Enterprise Development (ICOPED) – University of the Philippines Los Baños, bringing decades of cooperative education, research, and leadership development.
Saath Janvikas Multi Purpose Seva Sahkari Mandali Ltd., empowering 30,000 members through training, self-employment, and financial support.

The UN Secretary-General’s 2025 report on Cooperatives in Social Development is out — and it’s clear: cooperatives are strategic assets for sustainable growth and the SDGs. The report highlights how coops are already tackling urgent challenges, from poverty eradication and decent work to rebuilding trust and social cohesion, while warning that only 20% of measurable SDG targets are on track.
